Where Product, User Experience, and Generative AI Intersect
April 2024

We are pioneering the integration of Product Design and Generative AI in both client projects and our own innovative ventures.  Explore our insights below as you consider your own solutions:

1. AI-Powered Efficiency: Bypassing Manual Data Hassles

New feature possibilities are enabled by large language models (LLMs), specifically by easily handling unstructured data.  Consider an example of the cumbersome, error-prone process of managing inbound invoices in accounting software. Contractors email their invoices in their own unique format, requiring manual review and line item data entry. It's a tedious task, demanding significant time and attention to detail.

Now let's envision a unique UX alternative: Upload all the invoices at once, and the software automatically recognizes and categorizes each line item from the uploaded invoices, directly mapping them to each contractor and their predefined projects.  Now we've moved to a less-intensive oversight activity, where the user is checking the performed work of AI.  The UX might show each uploaded invoice side-by-side with the pre-filled form for fast eye-balling before approval.  Key Insight: Transition from manual data entry to human oversight of AI data extraction – a theme we will continue to see prevail.

2. AI Without the Chat Overload

Let's step back and recognize that shifting all user interactions to chatbot-style inputs isn't always the right path.  OpenAI's ChatGPT sensationalized the allure of conversational interfaces.  Reminiscing to the keyboard-intensive command line interface before the Macintosh and Windows, conversational interfaces cannot be a one-size-fits-all solution for modern UX design.

Instead, we need to enrich the interfaces that users are already familiar with.  AI should seamlessly work behind the scenes, auto-populating and adjusting the UX based on the user's behavior and preferences.  This approach ensures that the technology adapts to the user, rather than forcing users to type in long instructions that describe their needs.  Key Insight: Respect users' comfort and habits while leveraging AI under the hood to streamline and personalize the user experience.
